It was a hoax. My grandfather's brother spent a lot of time trying to establish a connection back in 1903 (or whenever it appeared). Shellenbergers from all over the country were corresponding with each other in search of an elusive relationship. (I got a lot of family history from those old letters). The State of Oregon finally issued a statement that no such person was in Oregon or died there.
